The history of coffee dates back to 850 A.D. It started when an Ethiopian shepherd named Kaldi realized that his goats were reviving after eating fruit. The shepherd himself decided to try this fruit, and he enjoyed the power and happiness he felt after eating it. Later, monks tried this mysterious fruit; but they didn't like the bitter taste and threw them into the fire. Soon after the delicious aroma filled into the nostrils, the monks became very curious and brewed a drink of roasted fruit. In the year 1000 A.D., coffee started to be produced in Yemen. As the Ottoman Empire expanded into Yemen, the Ottomans met coffee.Özdemir Pasha, the governor of Yemen of Suleiman the Magnificent in 1517, brought coffee to Istanbul, which he admired the taste, and offered coffee to the palace. The first coffee shop opened in Istanbul in 1550. The next step in the journey of coffee was in 1615, when Venetian merchants took their first coffee seeds from Istanbul to Venice. Thus began the passion of coffee that the Italians never gave up. During the siege of Vienna in 1683, the Ottomans left behind sacks of green coffee seeds. Since the secret agents who watched the Turks during the siege knew the true story of these seeds, ''Turkish drink'' started to be drunk in a short time. By 1750, much of Western Europe filled with coffeehouses. Voltaire, Balzac, Beethoven, and Mozart were among the regulars of the coffeehouses, where writers, composers, and intellectuals gathered. The coffeehouses, which first opened in Tahtakale in the Ottoman Empire, were marked by the social life of the period and the coffee houses where books and beautiful writings read, chess and backgammon played, poetry and literature conversations held.
